Curcumin – Daily wear and tear of the joints leads to the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which leads to the breakdown of joint cartilage.  Restricted movement soon follows.  Curcumin has a long history of medicinal use due to its antioxidant properties.  The science around curcumin has increased dramatically with over 7,000 studies currently in PubMed (database of scientific publications).  Scientists believed that curcumin’s benefits arise from its ability to reduce free radicals in the osteocartilaginous tissue.  Curcumin is not only supportive, it also comes without the side effects experienced by more than half of those who take pharmaceutical painkillers.  ForeFront Equine is one of the first equine companies to incorporate curcumin in our equine product line.  It is technology like this that makes ForeFront Equine a leader in equine nutrition.

Egg Membrane – Comprised of collagen, elastin, chondroitin sulfate, and hyaluronic acid – the building blocks of connective tissue – natural egg membrane is a great ingredient to promote joint health.  Collagen is a fibrous protein critical to cartilage strength and elasticity.  Elastin is a protein critical to skin, cardiovascular, cartilage, and spinal column health.  Elastin gives tissue the elastic tension and ability to resume its shape after stretching.  One clinical research study with fifty-seven (57) canines with limited joint mobility demonstrated positive changes within 7 days; all subjects exhibited increased activity and mobility by the conclusion of the 28-day study.  ForeFront Equine is the first equine company to combine curcumin with egg membrane.  

MSM – MSM is a naturally occurring nutrient found in small amounts in a variety of foods.  Published research shows MSM to be safe and successful in promoting joint comfort and supporting a normal range of motion in animals.

The sulfur in MSM helps promote flexibility and elasticity of body tissue and helps maintain cell membrane permeability. MSM also acts as a powerful antioxidant, scavenging free radicals and aiding in muscle function and joint fluid production.

Why are probiotics essential and, more importantly, why equine specific probiotics?

Probiotic/Prebiotic Equine Blend –The performance and health of your horse is dependent upon the proper balance of digestive tract bacteria. Probiotics play a critical role in your horse’s diet by helping to ensure a healthy digestive tract, enhancing the immune system and defending against pathogenic agents in the digestive tract.  ForeFront Equine is the first equine company to use this unique Equine Specific Probiotic Blend. 

The intestinal tract encompasses one of the most diverse microbial settings ever discovered.  Dependent on the life style and/or types of nutrition, the digestive tract could be subjected to minor or major alterations with possible vulnerability to disease. Thus, any disruption in the inherent nature of the GIT environment can inadvertently have unfavorable and irreparable, even tragic, consequences.  Today, “good” bacteria known as probiotics are used to maintain the microbial balance of the GIT ecosystem. 

Experts agree that persistent viability of probiotics within the GIT is crucial to overall health, and the important factor here is that the “good” bacteria used in supplementation must be specific to the species. In animal products, the probiotic strains typically used are either human or bovine derived.  These are considered non-indigenous (foreign) as they are extracted from a non-species source. 

Indigenous probiotic bacteria can tolerate the harsh conditions of the GIT (Iyer et al., 2005), while non-indigenous bacteria are unable to endure such harsh conditions.  The introduction of non-indigenous probiotics into the intestine can lead to some alterations in the microorganism environment resulting in the emergence of metabolic syndrome, autoimmune diseases, and other disorders in a short- or long-term period (Barzegari, 2014).   

For this reason, ForeFront Equine is using a novel probiotic blend that includes two equine specific probiotic strains – Lactobacillus fermentum and Lactobacillus salivarius.  These indigenous strains were cultured directly from horses (in a non-harmful manner).  Since they are host specific they can withstand the rigors of the equine digestive tract.  Each digestive tract (human or animal) has a different pH, temperature, and ecosystem.  Supplementing your horses’ diet with a host specific strain greatly increases the likelihood of those strains surviving in your equine athlete’s complex digestive ecosystem. 

Equine Specific Enzyme Blend – is a multi-enzyme blend of non-animal source enzymes made specifically to aid in the complex digestive system of the horse. The blend is very successful in the pH range of 3 to 8, working continuously throughout the pH variations in the digestive tract. This is critical because pH in various segments of a horse’s GI tract range from 2.6 to 7.4.

The blend consists of a variety of digestive enzymes including amylase, protease, lipase, and a special enzyme mix. This enzyme complex is capable of breaking the 1-6 carbon bonds found in legume sugars. These sugars are difficult for horses to digest. When feed contains a high percentage of grain and/or alfalfa, the microbial flora ferment these sugars, which can result in the horse’s digestive discomfort. Equine Specific Enzyme Blend consists of the enzymes required for hydrolyzing plant based feed regardless of the mix of grains, legumes, and hay. It also unlocks metabolic energy and nutritive factors, increasing the nutritional value of feed. As with the Equine Specific Probiotic Blend, our product was made specifically for horses, making it safe and supportive.

Organic Papaya – It’s likely you don’t think much about your digestive system unless it gives you problems. When working properly, it breaks food down into smaller components so that your body can absorb and use nutrients from the food you eat. If healthy, your body produces the enzymes you need for proper digestion. Papaya contains a proteolytic enzyme called papain, which is most abundant when the fruit is ripe. Proteolytic enzymes aid in protein digestion.
